Chapter 15

After instructing Jake to tie his horse to the back of the buggy, Colt followed Carianne and Katherine into the house.

“Rhyan.” Carianne’s voice echoed off the walls of the foyer.

“Back here, CeCe.”

They trooped through the living room to the back parlor. Rhyan stood at the French doors, the baby, looking very tiny, cradled in his arms.

Just the sight of that tiny baby, so perfect in every detail, reminded Colt of the wondrous works of God. If God could do that, He’d take care of their troubles. In time. If people didn’t get in the way of His work.

Carianne dashed toward them. “How was my little boy?”

“Fine. We’ve been carrying on quite a conversation—mostly one-sided.”

Carianne took the baby, swinging him in her arms. “So, little Davey, tell me how your papa was?”

Rhyan laughed. “Fortunately for me, he can’t talk.” He looked over Carianne’s head to Colt. “Emma is in the garden with Mother.”

“I’ll go get her,” Katherine said. She slipped Colt a backward glance as she opened the door. He hated to see her go, but he could think a sight better with her out of the room.

“How was your ride?” Rhyan asked.

“It turned out more exciting than we’d expected,” Carianne replied.

While she gave Rhyan the details of their encounter with the rustler, Colt’s mind followed Katherine out to the garden where she was probably relating their adventure to Ma and Arabella.

Why had he volunteered to teach Katherine to shoot? Yes, Carianne had asked him about it, but there was no urgency.

He knew why, and it had nothing to do with her need to learn to shoot. He wanted to spend time with her. This new exhilaration held him in its grip, and heaven help him, it was wonderful. But dangerous. And like a runaway horse, too late to corral. His desire was as irresistible as apple pie to a hungry man.

Carianne’s skirt brushed past him, bringing him out of his reverie. “The baby’s going to sleep, and I have to lay him down.” She turned back and lifted the infant’s tiny hand, waving it. “Say bye-bye to Papa.” She directed the baby’s wave to Colt. “Say bye-bye to Uncle Colt.”

Colt smiled and touched the velvet skin of the baby’s fisted hand. “Sleep tight, Davey. Don’t let your Mama and Papa spoil you too much.”

Carianne laughed. “And his grandmamma. And his aunt. Oh, Colt, thank you for offering to teach Katherine to shoot. I can tell she loves riding, and when these outlaws are caught, she’ll want to ride around the ranch. We’ll feel much better if she knows how to handle a gun.”

After Carianne cleared the room, Rhyan said, “So you’re going to teach Katherine to shoot?”

“Yeah, I can get over here a couple of days a week and take her to the shooting range. I know you’ve been busy with the Cattleman’s Association. Do you have a problem with me teaching Katherine?”

“If Charley doesn’t have a problem, I don’t.”

Colt scowled. What was he getting at? “Charley’s busy getting the show ready.
